Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
5 Things We Know on a Friday: 11/20/09
- Lubbock Mayor Tom Martin was on KFYO this morning with Chad Hasty and Rex Andrew still trying to justify and explain away the LP&L takeover of Excel Energy. It wreaks of ramming something down the throat of a populace that the Council knew wouldn’t go for it if debated publicly. Hence, you get less transparency in government and a deal that is dubious at best. Martin and the rest of the Council don’t seem to understand that this is going to be a wedge issue this spring that will cost them there jobs.
- If there’s any truth to the rumors that there is “mutual interest” between Texas Tech’s Lead Pirate, Mike Leach, and Louisville then expect those to explode after the Tech – OU game this weekend and as Louisville nears the end of their frustrating run with Steve Kragthorpe. Those that don’t think Louisville has the money and the stones to go after Leach are severely mistaken. Louisville has the same stadium size as Tech with much more corporate backing. Their A.D. Tom Jurich is one of the most respected in the business when it comes to marketing and making deals and he’s not afraid to go after a high-profile name. Throw in the fact that their men’s basketball program is a cash-cow and you’ve got a school that can make a run for anyone if price is the only concern.
- Much has been made about the early start time for this weekend’s Tech – OU game. NO college game should start before noon. Ever. Don Williams at the A-J tried to debunk the idea that Tech plays poorly in early starts. He makes some good points but I’ll stand by the idea that I’d rather see Jones Stadium rocking at 6p.m. than what we’ll see tomorrow which will be fewer than 50K fans in the stands at kick-off. Throw in the fact that your student section will be half-full and fully hung-over and you get a dead stadium. It won’t help.
- I admit it. I’m a CNBC junkie. The best show on TV during the morning hours isn’t the drek that ESPN churns out or even the infomercials on The Golf Channel. The best show on TV during the morning is: Squawk on The Street. Period. It doesn’t hurt that Erin Burnett is on there I suppose either.
- Oprah is cutting back to four a shows a day soon. Great. Now only 4 to go. . .
