Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
Got word this morning that actor-comedian Ken Ober had passed away at 52. Man, does that hit home. If you are in your 30′s or 40′s you’ll most likely remember him as the host of MTV’s Remote Control, a.k.a. the last great game show. Remote Control also gave us Colin Quinn but we won’t hold that against it right now.
No, for many of us Remote Control represented OUR game show, the first one that went modern and was not Wheel Of Fortune-esque. It also had Kari Whurer. That alone should rank it high on your list.
That we lose Ober too early is a given but it is also a slap in the face of cold reality for guys and girls our age to realize where we are now in life. Most of us, if we saw Remote Control for the first time being watched by our kids, would probably mock it. Too bad. I hope I haven’t lost all of that “cool” factor yet. . .
The show also represented the turning point along with Yo! MTV Raps, that MTV was moving away from actual movie videos and going to anything but the videos that made us watch in the first place. I blame Colin Quinn.
So, today if you can, raise a toast to our youth and to Remote Control. You’ll feel better.
MORE LATER
