Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
Is it really a North – South thing for the Texas Tech defense? Surely not but that was one good question put to us by The Big Red Machine, our producer Mathew Copple, yesterday when we were talking about which Tech defense would show up Saturday in Stillwater for the OSU tilt.
Will it be the defense that shutdown K-State, Nebraska and Kansas or will it be the defense that got pushed around at home by A&M and beat down in the second half by UT’s run-game in Austin? North – South divide?
Here’s what the Texas Tech defense has done this year in each game rush and pass. You can see what they’ve done against hte North and what they’ve done against the South.
AGAINST THE RUN

UND 29 73 1 12
RICE 35 60 0 15
UT 41 135 2 34

AGAINST THE PASS
Game Passes Yds. TD Long Sacks
UND 20-28-0 134 0 18 2
RICE 25-41-1 197 1 27 6
UT 24-34-2 205 1 25 1
UH 38-58-1 435 1 45 2
UNM 30-56-0 316 2 61 3
KSU 16-24-0 168 0 52 4
UN 23-38-1 215 1 30 5
TAMU 19-28-0 238 1 41 1
KU 21-37-0 187 1 29 6
It can’t really be that simple can it? No, of course not, but it is a point well-made. Texas Tech has fattened up on the weak North squads while suffering both Big 12 losses in the only games they’ve played against the South. Can they reverse it this weekend in Stillwater? In large part the answer to that question will be up to what the Texas Tech defensive front does to OSU’s offensive line and how they control the OSU run game.
We’ll have more on that match-up later today.
