The City of Lubbock’s naked power grab

Good afternoon West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . . .

Does this really seem like a good idea to you?

LP&L (City of Lubbock) eliminates competition . . .

The City announced yesterday it is going to spend 87 million dollars to buy Excel Energy in the name of “easing down-town redevelopment” It is funny how they didn’t make this announcement before the bond vote on Tuesday. Makes you wonder if they knew folks would be opposed to the power grab. Pun intended. This seems fraught with trouble both short-term and long-term. The folks of Lubbock sent a clear message Tuesday they don’t mind necessary spending right now. To do this without putting it before the public is a big mistake in my mind. It is almost as if Tom Martin and the rest of the council want to lose their jobs.

So, what do you think? Right time for the right reasons or just simply a power grab on the part of city “leaders”? On KCBD’s noon newscast only 20% of respondents to their poll from last night thought the move was a good one. I’m waiting to see how this gets spun by the “leaders”. Should be interesting.
