Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
All Quiet on the Red Raider Front (for a change)
How strange it is this year for Texas Tech fans. No Mike Leach to _______ stories. No watching QB’s go from award show to award banquet to sneaking into the White House, OK they really didn’t sneak in last year. This is the quietest this period of time has been for Tech fans in many a year. It was this week a few years ago when the Lead Pirate did or didn’t interview with Miami’s A.D. Last year there was the mystery trip to Seattle. In between you had players picking up awards left and right, on and in the news.
This year the best we can give you is the possible revealing of hypocrisy on the part of the Heisman Trophy folks on who and how they decide to invite to their little party each year. Last year they said they couldn’t possible sully the events of the night by having Tech’s Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree in NYC because there was such a huge break in voting between the top three an them. This year they’ve got five. Imagine that. Tim Tebow is there. Imagine that.
The fault last year was with the voters as much as the committee. Would it have killed them to invite a couple more great players? No, but they didn’t. The problem is that their arbitrary policy leaves them up to conspiracy theory and allegations of politics. Not by fans, but by coaches. Read this from the Lead Pirate:
Leach’s points to the Star-Telegram are valid and right on. They reveal an understanding that the landscape in college football is unfair and tilted to the special few programs with pedigree and cash. Texas Tech isn’t one of those programs. The question now is can Texas Tech ever become one of those programs given the current college football landscape?
There are a very few schools in the elite club of college football. With the rising costs and the rich-get-richer set-up of today Tech will not ever catch up in terms of cash. The only way to break into the club is to win big. Often. A lot. Can that be done without the cash anymore? I honestly don’t know. What are your thoughts?
