As one headline read today: “can it get any more bizarre for Florida Gator fans?” Last night Urban Meyer was leaving for health reasons. Today reports are that he’s just taking a leave of absence. The biggest story in all of this needs to be a healthy Meyer. Anything else after that is just subplot to this soap opera. I’m hoping he’ll get back to doing what he loves soon. In the meantime though a lot is at stake for many institions. Wait. That should read business, because that is what is at stake at Florida as well as the school that loses their high-profile head coach in January if Meyer does indeed take more than a leave of absence.
You’d think at this point Meyer has earned that right from Florida. What more could the man do? He gave them Tim Tebow for gosh sakes. I can’t imagine Florida officials pressuring him to completely walkaway, but stranger things have happened.
While the Gator fans wait to find out if this is a break-up or a Ross-style “on a break”, places like Boise, Idaho and Norman, Oklahoma will hold their breath. If this is more than “a break” those will be the first places Florida officials will call. Then of course we get the domino effect after that.
