Good evening West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
Who is next for Texas Tech?
There’s a story floating around that Texas Tech folks are going to talk to Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart about the open head coaching job. Don’t bet on it.
Gerald Myers tells us today that he isn’t on the radar.
The story got legs when someone at ESPN Dallas posted it on their website. Smart may be a helluva guy but he’s only a few years removed from a position coach. He’s the Sonny Dykes of defense. Heck, I’d look pretty good coaching Alabama’s defense these days so I’m not sure that qualifies him as HC material right now. For further review, I give you Greg Robinson.
More like is that the rumor got started when someone somewhere got the idea that Tommy Tuberville might try to raid Nick Saban’s staff and bring in Smart as Tech’s defensive coordinator. The idea that he’s a HC candidate should be laughed out of the room.
Unless of course there’s someone other than Gerald Myers and Dr. Guy Bailey running a Tech search…hmmmmmmmm.
Meanwhile it looks more and more like it’ll be at least til Monday for Tech fans to find out officially who the new coach will be. Tuberville has gained a lot of ground this week but it is still Ruffin McNeill in the driver’s seat for now. That could change of course between now and whenever.
How ’bout those motions?
Mike Leach and lawyer Ted Liggett did what they said they’d do as they filed some motions in court today to get as much material evidence they can on Texas Tech before they file any lawsuit(s). The A-J has the write-up and if you’re bored you can read the whole thing. It is the first step in what should be a long conversation that will end in some sort of settlement between the parties.
I’m told there are major legal hurdles Leach must overcome just to get the suit to trial, let alone get it in front of a jury. That said, The Pirate has some time on his hands right now and all those years spent in law school may just pay-off now. We’ll see soon enough.
