Quick Tech-SMU post-game thoughts.

Tech wins 35-27….All day long, through the sweltering heat, you just knew Tech was gonna push though and break this game open. They didn’t. They didn’t do it, but they still did enough right to make most Tech fans happy and while at the same time wondering how much more can they show next week in New Mexico against a hapless Lobo team.

So…

Loved the fast paced nature of the offense. Love how they got the line and ran the play and pushed the issue. This will pay dividends later in the year. Didn’t like how the line couldn’t get down and dirty and get a yard or two when they needed it. Run blocking, much like the last several years must improve for Tech to win meaningful games.

The defense showed me more in the secondary than I thought they would. Played well in press coverage, handled nickel and dime well and recovered from mistakes pretty good. . It is a little unfair to judge this defense by what you saw today. Tech won’t face again the likes of an SMU-June Jones’ offense this season so the sets they ran are already obsolete. That said, I thought the young secondary showed a physical nature that I liked.

Can’t really judge guys like Brian Duncan or even Colby Whitlock today because of the quick throw nature of the SMU offense. Even next week against UNM not sure how much we can read ‘cuase they’re so bad… Still, liked the way they flowed to the ball and am encouraged by the various fronts we saw today. Give them an incomplete if you must grade them.

Should you be concerned about FG’s? Yes. Against anyone those mistakes are not good. Not sure what to say other than it looks like another year of holding your breath on FG’s and extra points. It was so much fun in 2008, why not try it again.

Overall I’m moderately pleased with the week one effort, (certainly better than what the folks saw in Norman and maybe in Houston ) but can understand the Tech fans that are wondering just what this team is made of. Hard to say after today.

I will say that the right guy is at QB, he proved it today with a rock-solid performance, and that the fan experience left nothing to be desired at a packed Jones Stadium. Football is back. That is a great thing. It only gets better from here.

Now, give us your thoughts and let us know what you thought about week one.

P.S.–The decision to go for it on fourth down in their own territory was a horrible call by Mi—…er…uh…Tommy Tuberville. Good thing he’s a first year coach. I’m sure he’ll mature and learn from that wickedly bad decision as they year goes along. . .

    It was hot.

Tubs need to get the message to the students to STHU during the other school’s fight song. Not cool. Not cool at all.

Felt pretty good at the 35-14 point. Especially the two sub-two minute drives sandwiched around halftime. Not sure what made the wheels come off after that tho…..I guess 60 yd fgs and drop 4th down INTs will do that to you.

The running game and lack thereof concerns me greatly.
