Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
1. You know Bruce Springsteen wakes up each day and wishes he weren’t the Poor Man’s Joe Ely.
2. I used to think Dallas Cowboys fans were the most bi-polar fans out there. Everything is either “Going to the Super Bowl!” or “Can’t Ever Win Another Game with (fill in the blank coach here )”. Now though that title goes to just about any college football fan-base out there, including of course Texas Tech. With the advent of 24 hour news, recruiting info and the ability to talk about stuff without using your real-name on message boards; college football fans have become rag-dolls twisting in the wind blown by not the news of the day but the news of the minute. If it is good, their University is virtuous and they proudly display their diploma or t-shirt. If it is bad, time to get the torches and pick-axes. I worry about some of y’all.
3. It is criminal, down-right criminal I say, that there is not a Stubb’s BBQ in Lubbock anymore. Even the 2nd coming that opened in the early 90′s was better than none at all. I know it’ll never be the same, but I wish the guy referenced in point #1 would consider doing something about it. . . Still one of my best night’s in the Hubbaplex was back in spring of ’97 taking in some BBQ at Stubb’s then walking over to the Depot Warehouse and enjoying The Joe Ely Band sounding mighty strong with Lloyd Maines on steel and Jesse “Guitar” Taylor knocking it out on lead. Awesome night with a somewhat unknown Susan Gibson opening minus The Groobees.
4. TCU Football wins 7 games next season, and not because of the drug scandal that will only get worse from here. They’ll win 7 games next year because the depth and physical nature of the Big 12 will wear them down like they haven’t since since, oh I don’t know, the days of the SWC when they were . . . average. Welcome back Frogs. Missed ya. ( This is where Mac Engel chimes in . . . )
5. If a man lives in Texas and doesn’t own a single pair of boots. . . it just makes me wonder about a lot of things in their life. . .

I know this column is 5 Things We Know but you coulda kept on going today. Preach On! You nailed it on all 5!
Thanks. I got a little misty-eyed just writing about Stubbs. . .
