Let's hear it for Louis! With Tiger a no-show in the top ten at the British Open we ask you what the toughest record in sports is to break. You tell us!

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

It was a great weekend to be a golf fan. Whether you were rooting on former South African farm-boy Louis Oosthuizen, former Texas Tech QB Billy Joe Tolliver in the celebrity challenge in Tahoe or just the local guys in the Lakeridge Stampede you had plenty of great moments.

With Tiger Woods matching two of his biggest droughts without a major leaving Scotland without the Claret Jug or a top-ten finish we can ask today’s question. What is the toughest record in sports to break? Is it Jack Nicklaus’ 18 majors? Is it Nolan Ryan’s 7 career no-hitters? What about that little 56-game hit streak Joltin’ Joe had? Look around and tell us what you think the toughest record in sports is to break today and we’ll read your answer on the show tonight. Of course you can call-in from anywhere at 1-866-984-5326 starting at 3.

We will also look at Texas Tech’s decision to end the PSL program at the United Spirit Arena for Lady Raider and men’s basketball. A great move, to be sure, and maybe one that comes a year too late.

We’ll also check in on some early high school football with the A-J’s George Watson and we’ll look at a productive weekend for the Texas Rangers, even if Cliff Lee is learning what like was like for Nolan Ryan with the Astros in 1987 . . . and that ain’t a good thing.

We’ll see you at three!

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

We’ve made it to the end of the week, so at least we got that going for us. Tonight we’ll ask you whether the Potts-Sheffield QB battle coming this August at Texas Tech is the best battle at that position in the last 40-years. It very well could be. We’ll find out what you think tonight and you can also post your thoughts here today.

We’ll also take your calls on the Friday Tri-Fecta and True-False quiz as well as look at Day 2 of the British Open, the Rangers win over Boston last night and of course the sale of the Rangers that could impact my fandom for years to come. If Nolan Ryan is gone, this Ryan may be gone too.

Get your calls in tonight starting at three on the toll-free at 1-866-984-5326.

Time to talk a lotta baseball with F. Scott on a Monday.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

It is raining again here in the Hubbaplex as we start another week, inching closer to NFL training camps and college football actual action vs. summer topics like hiring trainers, practice turf and white helmets. August can’t get here soon enough . . .

We won’t be on the show today but we do welcome back an old friend in Scott Fitzgerald. He’ll have plenty to talk about with the Rangers’ trade for Cliff Lee as well as the All-Star Break. As we know, baseball is a talkin’ sport, so get on the phone early and give him a call at 1-866-984-5326.

We’ll all be back on the show come Tuesday when we get together again at Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ. As for me today, I’m gonna go re-watch that Jimmy Buffett concert for the gulf from last night on CMT. What a great show. If you missed it, you gotta try and find it when they show it again.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Today on The Show we’ll be taking your calls on the Rangers destruction of the Astros over the weekend as well as the College World Series, which we’ll bring you at six here on The Fan. Josh Hamilton had the second longest home run in Ballpark history Sunday so that’ll provide us with our Running Topic. Who do you consider the greatest home run hitter of all-time and who is the best in your life-time as a fan?

Our Random ? today focuses on the Forbes Report last week that listed Jerry Jones as one of the most disliked figures in sports. Figures. . . Is it just because he owns the Dallas Cowboys or does he do things that rightfully puts him on this list? How do you like Jerry Jones as a Cowboy fan now after 20 years of ownership?

Y’all dodge the rain and be thankful for what we’ve got. We’ll see you at 3 p.m. on SportsRadio 134o The Fan.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Another great day in the Hubbaplex. Today we’ll visit with Shaun Lenrose from The Ticket in Dallas about how the Rangers are bouncing back this week as well as Cowboy’s OTA’s and how the Tech guys are doing.

It is also Cultural Index Day so get ready to stretch your mind a bit outside the box of sports.

Of course we’ll also get your thoughts on the Ump blowing the call in the Detroit game costing Armando Galarraga a perfect game. No doubt it was a horrible call, but it does that mean MLB needs to go to full-on replay like the NFL does? You let us know today. As for me, I still say no replay in sports. I can live with bad plays by players, bad decisions by coaches and even bad calls by officials. Life’s hard.

Get your thoughts in now and we’ll read them on the air tonight, or give us a call at 1-966-984-5326 no matter where you are from 3-7 on The Fan!

The Williams and Hyatt Show has really been on the air 16 years? Yep. Thanks folks for another year of letting us do what we love. See you at 3 on The Fan!

Happy June West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Well, here it is: 16 years of The Williams and Hyatt Show. We signed on for the first time back on June 1, 1994 on KFYO 790 and have been rocking and rolling ever since! We want to say thank you so much to all the folks that have made it possible over the years from the station personnel to to the advertisers and most of all to you the listener and caller. You’ve made it special and we look forward to many more years together on the radio.

We’ll do it up big for the anniversary show later this month, but for today we’ll just try and recap everything that’s gone on since we last visited. Both LCU and Texas Tech saw their baseball seasons come to an end, with the Chaps at the NAIA World Series and Tech at the Big 12 Tournament. We’ll talk to George Watson from the A-J about the Red Raiders and visit with Voice of LCU, Chris Due on Tuesday.

We’ve got plenty of Rangers and Astros to go around and a stellar Coke 600 and Indy 500 to look back on as well as The Colonial.

So, 16 years in and we’re still going strong with lots to talk about. Mainly we want to visit with you so get that phone charged and give us a call. We’d love to know what you were up to on June 1, 1994 if you can remember that far back.

Thanks again,

Hyatt

We say good-bye to a friend. Too soon.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Most folks probably spent last night thinking about NCAA Tournament brackets, maybe the weather for the start of the week or just enjoyed wrapping-up another fine early spring weekend. Me? I couldn’t quit thinking about Mark Austry.

The former Red Raider baseball player died Sunday after finishing a half-marathon in Dallas. He was 33.

I can’t even begin to put into words the sadness I feel for his wife and two daughters, ages one and three. I can’t do a better job of talking about his life, what he meant to his family and friends and what kind of man he was than others closer to him can, so I’ll let you read some of their thoughts here in the A-J and in the Star-Telegram.

Mark was a part of a special time for Texas Tech Baseball and I was lucky enough to have a front row seat to watch and get to know him, the other players and coaches as I called the games on SportsRadio 1340 with Mark Finkner. We got to share a fantastic group experience of triumphs and tribulations with some incredible highs on and off the field as well as some kicks in the gut that left you wondering what it would ever take for Tech to break through.

Those players from that time set a standard and developed a bond that I haven’t seen since around Tech baseball and maybe even Tech sports. If you read the comments from Coach Hays and some of Mark’s friends and family you’ll get an understanding of who he was and why people gravitated to him. It doesn’t begin to paint the full picture though and for that I’m sorry. I’m far too unskilled a writer to give you a better picture of Mark. This is one of those cases where if you didn’t know him you’ll just have to take our word for it that he was a great guy.

Mark was in town a few weeks back for the Alumni Baseball Game. I didn’t make it out that weekend to see any of the guys through a series of life-happenings that sometimes come up. I even told former pitcher Shane Wright after the weekend not to worry, I’d catch everybody in the fall when they come back for a football game. No. I won’t. At least not Mark.

Once again I’m taught not to take any day, sunny or rainy, busy or boring, for granted or that it should be expected rather than relished.

It is ironic that former Tech pitcher Zack Stewart wrote on his facebook page just Saturday,”thinks there’s days it’s just great to be alive.” Come to find out he was right. They all are.

I’ll leave it for others that knew Mark better to tell his stories, but I hope you listen ’cause it is worth it.

I’ll leave you today with the words of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

To be sure, our friend Mark filled his unforgiving minute of Life with more than sixty seconds run. Mark was a Husband, a father and a Man.

Hyatt

Can Tech finally knock off Rice in Houston?

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Dan Spencer’s bunch took it on the chin Friday at Minute Maid Park in Houston getting stomped by TCU 11-2. The 7th ranked Frogs knocked around Chad Bettis pretty good, making it two starts in a row that Bettis hasn’t really looked, well, Bettis-like. Even in a win last week at home over Bethune-Cookman Bettis was tough on himself afterwards for not pitching better. After seeing Tech last week at home struggle against Washington State’s second and third line pitching I was more worried about the Red Raider bats than Bettis against TCU. Turns out it should have been both.

Today talented Bobby Doran takes the mound for Tech. He pitched well enough to beat a lot of teams last weekend at home against Washington State. Spencer probably left him in a few batters too long as his pitch count had mounted up to three digits before his exit. Doran has quality stuff and should be able to get Big 12 hitters out. One thing he must do better today than last week is get out of innings and finish off hitters. Sounds easy but it is something a lot of younger guys have trouble with.

Last week his game was like a round of golf where you have one blow-up hole each nine and it keeps you from scoring well. Doran had a batter each inning that gave him trouble, sometimes with two strikes, sometimes with two outs but each time making him throw more pitches and cost him a chance to go deeper in the game.

If Doran can close out innings quickly in the first three today he’s got a chance to give Tech a shot at beating Rice, something that should be savored any time, any place. If Doran struggles early the Tech pen has already shown that it just isn’t that deep right now and Saturday will be a long day if Spencer has to go to it in the middle innings.

Either way, wish I was down in Houston ( I never say that ) to watch this one.

DoubleTNation has a good breakdown as well today so make sure you drop by their site and say hello!.

MORE LATER
