Should Texas Tech "punish" A&M for going to the SEC?

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Breaking up is hard to do. Just ask anybody. There’s hurt feelings, you fight over wagon wheel coffee tables and usually some one throws out a box of t-shirts that you’ve collected since high school. It can get ugly.

Just ask Texas Tech and Texas A&M officials.

One of the big things we’ll be talking about today is the cannon shot fired by Texas Tech A.D. Kirby Hocutt towards College Station yesterday in the A-J. Hocutt says, and that he’s backed by his coaches, that either A&M plays Texas Tech in all sports or it’s none.

“We discussed it with all our head coaches,” Hocutt said, “and that’s something we as an athletic department and we as a group of coaches feel strongly about at this time.”

As the Aggies exit to the SEC looms we’ll see more comments like this from A.D.s around what’s left of the Big 12. You’ve got the specter of the Border War between Kansas and Missouri coming to an end after 150 years of pure, awesome William Quantrill fueled hate. You’ve got Texas and A&M trying to figure out if it’s ok to date again on Thanksgiving or whether they should wait a while til it feels right.

Now, you’ve got the Red Raiders saying either you play all of us or none of us. Does it have to be that way?

We ask you today, should it be all or nothing? Do you want Texas Tech to play Texas A&M in any sports, let alone football? If not, why?

It reeks of punitive action by Hocutt and Texas Tech over something that I don’t think Tech needs to be upset about. A&M only did what so many Texas Tech fans wanted to see the Red Raiders do: leave the dying Big 12. A&M had a stable place to go in the SEC, one that doesn’t have to work around The Longhorn Network, an interim-commissioner for life and the Fake Dan Beebe on Twitter making more sense than the actual “leaders”. Had Texas Tech gone to the Pac-12 like so many wanted, it would be Tech fans saying teams like Baylor and Kansas don’t need to have hard feelings towards them, Tech’s just taking care of Tech. Well, same goes for the Aggies.

Personally, if it works for some Tech sports to play A&M and the coaches agree, let ‘em play. If it doesn’t work or if the coaches don’t want it, then don’t play them. But to issue an edict of all or nothing implies that it is a punishment to A&M for doing what Tech couldn’t do but wanted to. That seems silly to me.

I still that that the future of “leagues” will actually be schools playing some sports against certain school and then playing other schools in other sports. What works for football, might not work for basketball. What’s good for a basketball league – not so good for tennis. In the coming years because of budget constraints and other factors, don’t be shocked to see it happen.

So, what are your thoughts? Keep playing the Aggies? Drop ‘em. All or Nothing? Let us know.

We’ll hit the air at 3p.m. today on The Fan. Be sure and tune in where ever you on with our free, live online streaming via www.1340thefan.com . Looking forward to your comments and input today.

If you just won the Powerball lotto, what kind of gift would you give Texas Tech University? Sports or non-sports related.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Just saw where the Powerball lotto is up around 150 million dollars. Not a bad little tax problem to have I must say for a dollar “investment”. I rarely play but for some reason it will occasionally grab my attention and dollars. I don’t even pretend it goes to public education any more. I just figure I’m buying a “dream” and paying a “stupid tax”.

Let’s say today though that you did hit the lotto and suddenly had the kind of millions to bestow on Texas Tech that many Red Raiders wish they had. I hear a lot saying that if Tech had a T. Boone Pickens the school would get a lot more out of it than Oklahoma State has so far. . .

So, what would you do with your cash? What would you fund at Texas Tech? Would it be sports-related? Would you do something for the school or college you got your major in? I’m interested to see how creative y’all can get with this today.

Don’t forget that if you live outside the Hubbaplex you can catch our show every day live via www.1340thefan.com where you can also download the smart phone app for SportsRadio 1340 The Fan. I also encourage all of you to give our podcast a FREE TRIAL right now.
Forever's Voice of the Red Raiders leaves us tonight with more memories than he could ever imagine.

Good evening West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were. . .

I wish I could put into words tonight everything I’m feeling with the passing of Texas Tech broadcasting legend Jack Dale. I wish I could, but I can’t right now. He meant so much to me as an inspiration to get into the business, as a mentor once I was crazy enough to try broadcasting, and then later as a great friend and co-worker.

Instead, I’ll leave you to the link and the story Don Williams crafted tonight for the Avalanche-Journal. I know they’ll be many more tributes to come for Jack, and I’ll have my own writings later this weekend when the pen inside my brain gets ready to write again, but for now I just want you all to know that there was no finer gentleman, no honestly kinder soul in this cut-throat business than Jack Dale.

Thank you, Jack. I don’t have the words. . .

Ryan Hyatt

The Williams and Hyatt Show has really been on the air 16 years? Yep. Thanks folks for another year of letting us do what we love. See you at 3 on The Fan!

Happy June West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Well, here it is: 16 years of The Williams and Hyatt Show. We signed on for the first time back on June 1, 1994 on KFYO 790 and have been rocking and rolling ever since! We want to say thank you so much to all the folks that have made it possible over the years from the station personnel to to the advertisers and most of all to you the listener and caller. You’ve made it special and we look forward to many more years together on the radio.

We’ll do it up big for the anniversary show later this month, but for today we’ll just try and recap everything that’s gone on since we last visited. Both LCU and Texas Tech saw their baseball seasons come to an end, with the Chaps at the NAIA World Series and Tech at the Big 12 Tournament. We’ll talk to George Watson from the A-J about the Red Raiders and visit with Voice of LCU, Chris Due on Tuesday.

We’ve got plenty of Rangers and Astros to go around and a stellar Coke 600 and Indy 500 to look back on as well as The Colonial.

So, 16 years in and we’re still going strong with lots to talk about. Mainly we want to visit with you so get that phone charged and give us a call. We’d love to know what you were up to on June 1, 1994 if you can remember that far back.

Thanks again,

Hyatt

From Tech Baseball to wondering if he really wants to be President anymore to getting the City of Lubbock out of the entertainment business, it's what we know on a Friday.

5 Things We Know On A Friday: 5/28/10

1. He won’t go to Arlington National Cemetery and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown. He couldn’t seem to remember why his MMS head quit yesterday. Can’t make his way down to Louisiana. He can’t seem to come clean about his administration perhaps buying off a Senate candidate. More and more I’ve decided Barack Obama just really doesn’t want to be President any more.

2. Please, please don’t spend any more millions on the Municipal Auditorium and Coliseum here in Lubbock. It is time for the City to get out of the entertainment business. If it is such a great idea, private investors will build a performing arts center. In the meantime use the $4.5 million for police and fire personnel. At least everyone gets something out of that!

3. Texas Tech’s Baseball team most likely won’t get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament even if they do beat Missouri and go 2-1 at the Big 12 Tournament. Hopefully folks won’t lose sight at what a great job Dan Spencer did getting this team to achieve much more with much less than anyone around the Big 12 thought possible. Remember, they were picked last in the league by the coaches that know the talent best. That was before injuries and a stupid suspension by the Big 12 killed most of their chances. Still this team laid the foundation for an improved program going forward.

4. I know where Perry The Platypus is. . .

5. $50 to $100 million for a new Lubbock Police Station? Really? Not buying it.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

We’re back in the studio tonight after a raucous trip to Rudy’s BBQ last night. Tonight’s question is simple. We want to find out what you think the biggest reason is for Texas Tech Football season tickets sales approaching an all-time record. Think on it for a bit and then put your answer here and we’ll read it on the air if you can’t call in at 1-866-984-5326.

The Avalanche-Journal has a story on the season ticket sales today.

We’ll also check in with George Watson following Texas Tech’s day one loss at the Big 12 Tournament to Texas A&M today 9-2. The loss means Tech will have to beat #1 Texas tomorrow and win again Saturday while A&M must lose their next two games for Tech to get out of pool play and go to the Championship game. Anything less and it is season over. Some would say it is season over anyways.

We’ll see you at three on the radio.

Great leadership and baseball website links plus some Tech Baseball thoughts on a Sunday

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

It is one of the great triumphs of my life, so I’m proud to announce that I will not be held hostage tonight waiting for the finale of Lost. Never seen it. Don’t feel worse of for it. If you like it, good for you.

Now, as we sit and wait on Tech and Nebraska to start the final game of their series with Tech’s NCAA chances clinging to a thread, we thought we’d pass along a couple of links for you on a Sunday.

If you’re into management strategy, own your own business or just like to read cool stuff you need to check out the Six Discipline’s site. You can find great links to other articles as well as quick thoughts on their blog. Very good place to start your day.

For you Ranger fan’s out there that like a little deeper analysis you need to go to Baseball Times in Arlington. Well written with different takes than what you’ll get in the DMN or The Star Telegram.

If you’ve got any links or websites you’d like to share with us feel free to post them here today.

Now back to the Red Raiders. If they win today they’ll still need to win at least one game at the Big 12 Tournament to feel safe about getting an NCAA Tournament bid. If no win today they have to go beat Texas, win their pool and then with the title game. Four straight wins. One for sure without Chad Bettis. Not gonna happen.

Bobby Doran goes today. If ever a guy took the ball thinking he needed to hold on to it for nine innings, today would be the day. There just isn’t a lot of help in the pen right now you feel good about, particularly after Johnson threw Saturday. The best thing that could happen is for Taylor Ashby Joey Kenworthy and the rest of the bats to wake up and bash their way into the NCAA’s old school style. Go win a 15-10 game and get on with it.

Here’s to Ken McQueen where ever you are. Thanks for helping wreck a season. I hope you feel good about it.
