The Law lost again vs. Baylor/Griner, Who is Muhammad Ali, The Texas Rangers Do it Again and Rick Perry lost to a guy named Newt. Really? Newt and Mitt?

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

5 Things We Know On A Friday:

1. While the Texas Tech Lady Raiders scrapped and did the best the could against Baylor Wednesday night, the real loss was the rule of law, once again in the Hubbaplex. The local D.A. had another chance to issue an arrest warrant for Baylor’s Brittney Griner for her assault on Jordan Barncastle 2 years ago and chose not to uphold the law. I’m still disappointed in that decision. Not so much for Barncastle, she’s long moved on, but rather for the rule of law in general. I’m tired of folks thinking they can get away with criminal activity just because it takes place at a sporting event. Why should that matter? I can’t do what Griner did at my work-place, why should she get a pass at The United Spirit Arena? A criminal assault took place in front of several officers and others that day. None did anything. The main reason is because they know schools like Tech don’t want the “negative publicity” of a cop doing their job on a basketball court. Looks bad… well—so what? Someday I hope we’ll get past this idiotic idea and start to enforce law no matter where. It’ll eliminate a lot of the crap most folks have railed against over the years on our show. . .

2. Muhammad Ali turned 70 this week. Good for him. I don’t want to upset ESPN or anything, but he’s still pond-scum for the way he treated Joe Frazier. If he were really a man of peace, he’d have done better by Frazier. As it stands, he used his “faith” as an escape for serving his country. . . Of course many will disagree and that’s fine and your right, still- Ali talked one game yet his actions didn’t back it up. Happy Birthday.

3. When Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels is old enough to vote, imagine how good the Rangers will be! To get Yu Darvish, who will be a solid 2nd starter, for that money is bold. Now that he’s playing poker against saying they’re not sure if they can afford Prince Fielder-you can bet he’ll get Fielder too. I’ll take Darvish over C. J. Wilson by 2 wins in the regular season plus anything else in October. Who’s with me?

4. We had a topic this week asking if a 4A or 5A school will ever win another UIL State Championship in Football again here in Texas. I’ll ask y’all. What do you think? It’s been over 30 years. Will it happen again? Why or Why not? I say no, unless they radically change the numbers for these schools West of I-35.

5. If you’re the Governor of Texas and you can’t whip guys name Newt and Mitt, not only should you get out of the race, you might want to resign as Governor and pay back the good folks of Texas for wasting all of our time and money. . .

Hyatt

The World Wide Leader In Stupidity may have just done one of their least favorite people a huge favor. Here's your 5 Things for a Friday.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

1. Right now the whole ESPN-Bruce Feldman saga sounds like a collection of boneheaded moves that has culminated in a final boneheaded move by the 4-letter network that only makes them look even more shabby than they normally look, which is somewhere below Geraldo Rivera’s sense of subtlety and ethics. . .that said we are still in the range of allegedly and supposedly regarding whether Bruce Feldman has been suspended by ESPN for his work on Mike Leach’s new book, so we”ll keep everything to the realm of speculation for now.

2. The first boneheaded move may have been by Feldman himself when he continued to work on Leach’s book after Leach sued Feldman’s employer, ESPN. Even if ESPN bosses had given him permission to continue, that’s just not a smart move. Certainly not, given ESPN’s history of hating anyone in their employ crossing them publicly.

3. The next boneheaded move would be by ESPN if they did give Feldman permission to conitnue working on the Leach book, then suddenly changed their mind and got upset when the book came out and, SHOCKINGLY, made them look bad. Even if Feldman allegedly revealed “inside information” about ESPN it is a dumb move to suspend him now. All this does is call more attention to a book I’m sure ESPN would rather have go away. If Leach and Feldman hired a PR Firm (ha) to promote the book, they couldn’t do a better job of it than what ESPN has done by allegedly suspending Feldman for something he may or may not have done in violation of his employ. You want it to go away, ESPN, don’t make news.

4. Bruce Feldman deserves better than ESPN.

5. Texas Tech starts practicing football again in a few weeks. It can’t come soon enough. Looking forward to watching new defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow go to work now that he’s had time to put in a little more of his system and knows his personnel a little better. Texas Tech may show one of the biggest statistical improvements in the country this year in total defense. If they want to play in something other than a cheap knock-off bowl–they better.

5 Things We Know On A Friday--From Big 12 Football to the boycott of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, no punches pulled here kiddos.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

1. Barry Trammel nails it in his blog for the Oklahoman this week when he talks about the collusion and other nefarious deeds going on right now between the Big 12, ESPN, Fox Sports and the Longhorn Network. Already we are seeing the cash grab by the networks using the Longhorn Network as their proxy. All the while Big 12 Commish for Life, Dan Beebe, will stand by and let this transpire because it is the best way for him to keep his job, err I mean keep the Big 12 together. Remember we said this Texas Tech fans; it’ll be the Red Raiders that see their game moved from the regular cable or over the air package this year to the Longhorn Network. That’ll force Texas Tech fans to have to subscribe and pay dollars to Austin or miss the game. Can’t wait for the calls to start coming in that week. . . In the words of Bob Uecker, “Hey buddy, great conference!”.

2. That Major League Baseball still allows the All-Star game to decide home field advantage in the World Series is proof that Bud Selig and the Lords of the Realm shouldn’t be allowed to make major decisions like fries or baked potato or regular or super regular… The only sport where the rules actually change depending on where the game is played during the championship decides it with an exhibition game? Still? Sad. Maybe someday the sad sacks at the NFL will wise-up and have the Hall of Fame Game determine the final possession of the Super Bowl. Then maybe folks would watch. . .

3. David Feherty is the most interesting person on TV right now. If we didn’t have him right now, CBS would pay writers thousands of dollars to create him.

4. The best part of the Roger Clemens trial is that it won’t take too long to find 12 or so jurors that don’t know anything about him. . .

5. Remember last spring how everyone in the U.S. was gonna boycott the All-Star Game in Phoenix because Arizona had a Governor that dared to want to enforce the law of the land? How’s that going? Oh wait, it’s not. Wonder why? Maybe it is because those in baseball realize the great rewards and opportunities that the United States has afforded them and their families…Lesson learned.

With the Dallas Mavericks win tonight, we can only hope that German fans of Dirk Nowitzki don’t take a cue from L.A. Laker fans celebrate the old-fashioned way by rioting. If that’s the case, let this be a warning right now to Poland and others, WATCH OUT, the NBA is going global and you have much to fear!!!!

That said, what a cool win by the Mavs tonight. Any minute now ABC and ESPN are going to have to admit that the Dallas has a good team and that their hype of the Not Ready For Prime Time Heat was a disservice to fans and viewers.

Take (UT's) knife, remove from back and proceed. How Texas Tech got blind-sided in the Big 12 Conference.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

I didn’t write anything about Texas Tech losing out on a chance to go to the Pac 10 and elevate the University because of the caving in by other Big 12 conference members yesterday because I was too mad. I was afraid I’d write something I’d regret. Now, I don’t care if I do. It is time for Texas Tech to take the gloves off, grow-up and get on with it.

Leave UT. Move on. You’ve been put in your place, Tech, now what are you going to do about it?

For the best writing on the subject and how Tech got sabotaged and why read ESPN.com’s Andy Katz‘s article. It becomes quite clear the how and some of the why, but it still took the complicity of other school to go along with it. National radio host Tim Brando also had great comments on how outside forces brokered this Big 12 payoff in order to keep the Pac 10 from getting to 16 teams. Go catch his interview on The Monty Show from last night to hear some stellar radio.

As for Texas Tech, make no mistake yesterday was a set-back and a bad day. How Kent Hance leads from this moment on will define his time at Tech, much more so than anything having to do with the firing of Mike Leach. That was small time stuff compared to the stakes right now.

As of now there is still a Board of Regents meeting schedule for Tech today. If there really is an offer still out there from the Pac 10, which I doubt, Tech should and I would say must take it. It is time for little brother to grow up and move out of the house that Texas built and controls.

We’ll have much more later today at three when we are live from Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ. I hope you put your thoughts about what has gone down and what Texas Tech should do now here on the site. I really want to know what you’re thinking about all of this.

Hyatt's got his sights set on everything from Tim Tebow and the Super Bowl Ad that's set off a fire-storm, Texas Tech's newest coach and Haitian relief efforts. Maybe you're mentioned too?

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

New Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville is putting together quite the staff. He added in Robert Prunty on Thursday from Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. HMA has an impressive list of graduates going on to college ball and then the NFL including guys like Tory Holt and Jay Ratliff amongst others. If nothing else, Tuberville’s staff has the ability to tap into talented pipe-lines not just in Texas but across the South and Southeast. The SEC country is an area Mike Leach’s staff spent a lot of time and money on over the last few years and it finally paid off in this recruiting class with guys like Corker and Boone. It is good to know that won’t be going to waste in the coming months and years.

Why wouldn’t CBS air a pro-life ad featuring Tim Tebow during the Super Bowl? It is funny that before he’s taken the stage in a pro sport, Tebow has already demonstrated more social awareness and the willingness to stand on principle than Tiger Woods could do in the last 15 years. Maybe Tiger was busy texting.

Why do I wonder if the money I donated to Haiti relief efforts will ever even end up there, let alone do anything of worht or value to help the people there? It was a broken country before the earthquake, why do we expect to be able to fix it after the disaster? Hopefully this moment will serve as a tipping-point to provide the Haitian people with global accountability that will force their government to improve. We can hope and try and help.

Pat Forde does a nice job writing a column that should make any fan think twice before dropping more than a few bucks a year for “recruiting news”. Of course they’ll be no shortage of grades being handed out by the folks at ESPN, but you can’t say he didn’t warn ya. Great read.

Why does the NFL think the fans want the Pro Bowl game to be played at all? Why?

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were…

We were going to release this on New Year’s Eve, but with all the madcap zaniness surrounding the firing of Mike Leach we decided to wait a few days, and in fact tweak the list up a bit to account for current events. Feel free to add your own predictions to the bottom of the page! Remember, Mr. Hyatt is not board certified as an oracle, see-er, predictor of events or a wizard. Some folks can and do lose money. Make sure any predictions are right for you and your family before taking and always consult a doctor.

Texas Tech and Mike Leach will settle out of court with very few details coming out about what precipitated his firing. Both sides will claim victory. Leach will walk away with about 1.2 million dollars. ESPN will devote two days of specials to the impact of standing in dark rooms on college football players and what President Obama should do about it.

Think coaches around the country aren't interested in working at Texas Tech? Think again.

Happy New Year West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were…

“Texas Tech will never get a good coach after firing Mike Leach”

–Caller

I don’t know how many times in the past 48 hours we’ve heard the doom and gloom crowd say that Texas Tech football is over and done with the firing of Mike Leach. They say that Tech will never get a coach to come in and work for Gerald Myers and Kent Hance. No one would ever want to be in this environment. It is over.

They’re wrong.

They’re wrong at about Tech’s chances just like they were wrong when Kansas fired Mark Mangino and folks said Lew Perkins would never get a good coach. All he did was capture Turner Gill, one of the hottest names on the market and a guy many thought should have had several BCS jobs before now.

Yesterday we found out former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville is telling any media outlet that will listen that he’s more than interested in Texas Tech. How could this be?

Texas Tech fans, once they get over the shock of what happened with Leach, will realize that the program has elevated so much over the decade that it is a highly desired job. There’s about 2.5 million reasons most coaches will listen to any overture by Myers. After that you’ve got great facilities, a lot of returning talent, a high-profile conference to play in and an administration that has spent madly on football the last few years and no matter what the Lead Pirate may say seems to have tried to do everything they could to help Tech win football games, perhaps even at the expense of every other program in the department.

That gets the attention of guys like Tuberville.

The bottom line is that interest like this from a guy that went undefeated in the SEC and went to 8 straight bowl games should make Texas Tech fans feel pretty good as the calendar flips over to 2010. It is also the ultimate compliment that can be paid to any coach. Mike Leach leaves Texas Tech a better place than when he arrived. Because of the work he, his staff, the administration and the fans have done since 1999, Texas Tech will be able to hire a coach today that will have much more impressive credentials that the ones carried by Leach when he was hired in 1999.

That’s one of the few positives that’s coming out of this situation right now, but for Tech fans you need to grab on to anything good you can right now.

MORE LATER
