The World Wide Leader In Stupidity may have just done one of their least favorite people a huge favor. Here's your 5 Things for a Friday.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

1. Right now the whole ESPN-Bruce Feldman saga sounds like a collection of boneheaded moves that has culminated in a final boneheaded move by the 4-letter network that only makes them look even more shabby than they normally look, which is somewhere below Geraldo Rivera’s sense of subtlety and ethics. . .that said we are still in the range of allegedly and supposedly regarding whether Bruce Feldman has been suspended by ESPN for his work on Mike Leach’s new book, so we”ll keep everything to the realm of speculation for now.

2. The first boneheaded move may have been by Feldman himself when he continued to work on Leach’s book after Leach sued Feldman’s employer, ESPN. Even if ESPN bosses had given him permission to continue, that’s just not a smart move. Certainly not, given ESPN’s history of hating anyone in their employ crossing them publicly.

3. The next boneheaded move would be by ESPN if they did give Feldman permission to conitnue working on the Leach book, then suddenly changed their mind and got upset when the book came out and, SHOCKINGLY, made them look bad. Even if Feldman allegedly revealed “inside information” about ESPN it is a dumb move to suspend him now. All this does is call more attention to a book I’m sure ESPN would rather have go away. If Leach and Feldman hired a PR Firm (ha) to promote the book, they couldn’t do a better job of it than what ESPN has done by allegedly suspending Feldman for something he may or may not have done in violation of his employ. You want it to go away, ESPN, don’t make news.

4. Bruce Feldman deserves better than ESPN.

5. Texas Tech starts practicing football again in a few weeks. It can’t come soon enough. Looking forward to watching new defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow go to work now that he’s had time to put in a little more of his system and knows his personnel a little better. Texas Tech may show one of the biggest statistical improvements in the country this year in total defense. If they want to play in something other than a cheap knock-off bowl–they better.

Hyatt

We’re back in studio today after a fun trip to Rudy’s BBQ. Thanks for all the kind words about our 16th anniversary. It’s a blast doing the show and we look forward to visiting with you guys for years to come.

Certain Facebook groups finally get something to talk about today, Man Vs. Food rocks and pumping water uphill still seems like a bad idea.

1. By the time Judge Bill Sowder is done today I’ve got a feeling certain Facebook groups are going to have a lot to say about Mike Leach v. Texas Tech.

2. I don’t think the few that post on Team Leach will be the one’s liking the results today.

3. Here’s hoping former Texas Tech pitcher Dallas Braden backs-up his perfect game from last Sunday with another solid start this weekend for the A’s. He just might end up being one of the best stories for Major League Baseball this spring if he can put together a nice start.

4. I admit it. I’ve become a huge fan of Adam Richman and Man Vs. Food. What makes me mad is that traveling around the country covering Tech sports over the past two decades me and several other members of the travel party have been doing the exact same thing he does, we just weren’t smart enough to start a TV show about it.

5. The Lubbock City Council voted to approve a deal with Garza County that should make it easier to begin the process of building the pipe (dream) line that will one day pump water from Lake Alan Henry to Lubbock. Uphill. This falls under the heading of “what could possibly go wrong”. Yes, we need to secure our water rights’ future and be good stewards of the land, but I still have major doubts about this project. We’ll see.

Texas Tech's new coach is telling the national media what he's telling the locals. It is all about the ring.

It’s an interesting read on Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville in S.I.Com today. He pretty much tells them what he’s been telling the locals but it is always good to get a perspective on what is said in the Hubbaplex and what is said to the National Media. In this case it is one and the same in message. Tuberville is here to win championships.

On that note it has been interesting as heck to see how some folks around the Tech fandom have had trouble with statements like that from Tuberville. It is as if saying that’s a goal of his makes is like saying it wasn’t of Mike Leach. It was, they just hadn’t gotten there yet. Know way of knowing if they’d ever have gotten there. For now, the challenge is Tubervilles.

Nobody, but nobody, sums up Tech’s 2009 season better than Mike Leach. WARNING, this video isn’t safe for work, home, small appliances and many emerging countries. It is mighty interesting to get a look inside the Tech locker room from last year and see what the former Lead Pirate thought about his crew.

I’m not too offended by the harsh language Mike Leach uses in the locker room. I grew up in a coaching family so it doesn’t shock me much. I do really wonder why it was taped and who thought it was a good idea to keep it around…

I can see where some folks might not like the “God Squad” comments but I have to wonder about the context and what it really means.

With Mike Leach in town talking to lawyers today I wonder if will ever get to read his statements. I doubt it.

Both Kristy Curry and Pat Knight should have another year as head coaches at Texas Tech. I firmly think that will happen.

What's Mike Leach doing back in Lubbock?

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Tech’s former Lead Pirate, Mike Leach, is back in the news. The A-J reports that Leach will be in town Friday to give his first put your hand on the Bible and tell the whole truth statements about his firing. Not only will Leach be giving his side of the story but other Tech officials like Chancellor Kent Hance are expected to put their statements down for history as well. Of course if this thing gets settled in the next few weeks like some still believe we’ll probably never get to see the statements. Probably.

I say that because conventional wisdom has been thrown out the window when it comes to this story. Leach has taken a much more aggressive stance than most fired coaches ever do and Texas Tech seems firmly entrenched and more than willing to let this play out in court confident that they’ve got the facts on their side. That’s what makes this so interesting to watch.

The element of the story about Leach this week that has tongues wagging is that his legal team is apparently seeking records from Frenship I.S.D. about Tommy Tuberville’s childrens’ enrollment status. In other words, when did they show up and did it pre-date Leach’s firing.

Some view this as a thinly-veiled attempt to smear Tech and Tuberville and encourage more conspiracy thinking on the part of the Team Leachers that think Leach’s firing and Tuberville’s hiring had been pre-ordained in the Old Testament. To some it wreaks of a desperate fishing expedition by a desperate legal team that knows they don’t have a chance in court so they’ll try to go scorched-earth in the media.

Then there are those that think it is a shrewd move to force Tech’s hand to hand over the cash and scare them out of a trial.

Some one’s got to be right, some one’s got to be wrong here.

Either way, if it does settle and there is no releasing of details, both sides will claim the other side caved in and that they won. They’ll also claim their disappointed the “facts” never came out, but they have to abide by the decision of the court. That’s why so many want this to go to trial. I still think those folks will be left wanting more, much more, at the end of the day.

By the way, if you’re looking for good comedy you’ve got to read the comment section after the A-J story on Leach. I worry about some of those folks, I truly do.
