Our thoughts on Pac 10 expansion, A&M to the SEC, Jimmy Buffett and a hat-tip to the man that got the ball rolling on this story.

5 Things We Know On A Friday: 6/11/10

1. For Texas Tech fans, Jimmy Buffett’s “Come Monday” will make for a good theme song this weekend. By then the Fog of War should have cleared and we’ll solidly know the lay of the land. Go West young man.

2. For Texas A&M fans, do you really want to trust the same folks that helped get your athletic department into $16 million worth of debt to make a good decision about whether to go to the SEC or not? This is one of those times when Old Army needs to listen to the folks in Austin. They’re weird but they’re right on this deal.

3. When Texas Tech ends up in the expanded Pac-10 it’s gonna be interesting to see which school Tech develops a good rivalry with. It was fun in the mid-90′s to watch Tech and Oklahoma State do battle on and off the field, starting with some heated baseball games. I’m hoping that same thing happens with Texas Tech and Arizona State. I think in many sports there’s a chance for some great battles. Plus Lubbock is so much like Tempe. . .

4. The idea that Texas would go to the Big 10 is laughable. The idea that Nebraska would go to the Big 10 with a chance Texas would follow is even more laughable.

5. One more hat-tip to Chip Brown of orangebloods.com for owning this story from the beginning. We got to know Chip when he was working in Lubbock and he’s a great guy and rock-solid old-school, get the dirt and get it right reporter. People have wrongly tried to dismiss him as some sort of basement dwelling blogger in order to ignore what he writes. ( read Baylor and Missouri fans here ) Chip has mastered the New Media but he’s as old-school as it gets when it comes to journalism. Well done, friend! You can follow Chip on Twitter at ChipBrownOB

Baylor's Pres. tries to beg for welfare, everyone is on the clock and we've got a random question for you. By the way, the Big 12 is still here as of 9a.m.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

It’s Monday and the Big 12 is still here. Well, sorta. Everyone seems to be “on the clock” depending on what you read. Mizzou and Nebraska on the clock from the Big 12, Notre Dame on the clock from the Big 10 and the Pac 10 wants to get something done soon. Good time to be a clock maker I suppose.

Tonight we’ll obviously focus on the conference realignment issues and take your calls on what’s best for Texas Tech as well as that thorny Baylor issue.

Speaking of which, Baylor President Ken Starr tried to make a case that Baylor is deserving of Football Welfare because, well, because they should dang it. They’re nice people. It’s cute that he thinks this has anything to do with anything other than TV sets, potential viewers and football. Cute.

We’re due to visit with LA Time’s writer Chris Dufresne as well as chat with National Football Post Director of Scouting Wes Bunting on the impact a Pac 10 merger would have on the Big 12.

Mainly we want to here from you. Give us a call starting at three at 1-866-984-5326.

Today’s Random Question: If Tech joins the Pac 10 where is the first place you want to make a road trip to and why? Post your answers here and we’ll read ‘em on the show tonight. Also, be sure and sign-up for the podcast so you can have the latest info on this story and others plus the best in Lubbock, West Texas and Texas Tech discussion delivered right to you when you when you want it and how you want it each day! It is simple and easy and makes you happier!

It's a Sunday Brunch chock full of conference realignment thoughts, links and why Baylor just can't mess this up. Will the Legislature really go to the wall for Baylor? I don't think so.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

Now that the Pac 10 meetings are underway out there on the Left Coast we should start to get even more information over the next 24 hours on what that league’s intentions are going to be. You read everything from full on merger with the Big 12 to just taking two team’s UCLA’s Dan Guerrero had some interesting things to say in trying to downplay reports of the Pac 10 adding more than just a few teams, likening it to the proposed expansion of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament to 96 teams the wimpered out just a few more additions.

Here’s a few links that should make for interesting reading for you.

The KC Star says Nebraska and Mizzou won’t confirm that they’ve been given a deadline to pledge allegiance to the Big 12.

ESPN has a couple of reports out there that tell us next to nothing of what’s going on. . .

The biggest story in the last 24 hours is that certain politicos in Texas may try and scuttle the move of Texas Tech, Texas and Texas A&M to the Pac 10 unless Baylor gets an invite to the party. Chip Brown of orangebloods.com was the first to report it and if you’re not following him on twitter you should be! ESPN has a write-up here for you.

As for the Baylor question, I’ve been told enough times by people that I trust that at the end of the day neither Texas Tech nor Baylor were going to be able to bring any sort of political pressure to bear that would keep Texas or A&M from going their own way. The political landscape is very different in 2010 compared to the early 1990′s in this State and this time around it is up to the individual schools to get the best deal they can get. Honestly, that’s exactly how it should be.

It also is arrogant to expect the Pac 10 to think they should be forced to invite a small, private religious school that they might not want to have any part of. Either way, I think they’ll be some political grandstanding over the issue but when push comes to shove legislators aren’t going to risk their careers or the the future of three State schools over Baylor. It won’t happen this go around.

Finally, the A-J has a recap of the (final) Big 12 meetings and what didn’t happen. The A-J also added this story Sunday about the upside for Texas Tech in the Pac10.

Now, let’s sit back and enjoy a beautiful Sunday in West Texas and hope we get some showers later on today to cool off and make that cotton grow!

Hyatt

A Saturday edition takes a look at the Lady Raiders win at UCLA, Rep. Carl Isett, Bob Knight's dead-on criticisms for college basketball and why the Big 12 should make plans now to move on without Missouri.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders put together a solid road win last night at UCLA, giving fans more and more reason to believe not just in Santa Claus this Christmas, but in a team that seems to be making great strides this year. The Lady Raiders found a way to win on a night when Kierra Mallard was defended, when it got close late and when they had to hit free throws to get it done. That takes some guts and grit and it looks like this bunch has it. They aren’t in the NCAA tournament yet, but they are building a nice resume right now. You can’t get into the tourney in November and December, but you sure can play your way out and right now this Tech team is playing their way to a point where a .500 record in the Big 12 will get them a bid. That’s progress.

Lubbock and Texas were both better off for Carl Isett having served in Austin. I hope he gets back into politics in the future. Now let the fun begin to see who chases his vacated spot.

The Phineas and Ferb Christmas special is some of the best TV I’ve watched all year. Seriously. I love the fact that a cartoon for kids today actually embraces Christmas, Santa Claus and elves. How un-P.C.

Former Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Bob Knight was right to rip on Kentucky coach John Calipari. He’s also right to rip on NCAA men’s basketball right now. Thanks to rules like one-and-done and the law of unintended consequences men’s college basketball is now the slimiest of sports in America. I don’t blame Knight for not wanting to be a part of it anymore.

Of course the Big 12 commish thinks the Big 12 will stay intact. That’s exactly the kind of forward thinking that led to the demise of the SWC. Folks from Missouri are making it mighty clear they’d enjoy an offer from the Big 10 and would go if asked. They may or may not get asked but the big 12 needs to proceed as if they’re gone in order to protect the interests of the other 11 schools.
